If you’re a musician in South Africa, chances are you’ve already registered with SAMRO, CAPASSO, and SAMPRA, and secured your ISRC codes through RISA. That’s a powerful first step—but it’s not the finish line. Many artists stop here and wonder why royalties aren’t flowing in.

Here’s what comes next:

  1. Maintain Your Memberships

    • Submit a notification of works every time you release music.

    • Pay CAPASSO’s annual membership fee (around R120).

  2. Generate Royalties

    • Royalties only come when third parties (radio, TV, games, etc.) use your music commercially.

    • Focus on getting placements with licensed broadcasters and sync opportunities.

  3. Network Strategically

    • Don’t rely on cold emails—build personal connections with radio stations, DJs, and publishers.

  4. Track Your Plays

    • Use Radio Monitor or War Music for radio.

    • For international syncs, try TuneSat.

    • Cross-check with your SAMRO statements to make sure you’re getting paid fairly.

In short, registration is just step one. The real work is maintaining, promoting, tracking, and ensuring your royalties reach you.

Until next time,
