Consistency Beats Inspiration: Lessons from 20 Years in Music

When people think about musicians, they often imagine bursts of inspiration, creativity flowing endlessly, and songs that come out of nowhere. But the reality is different. After 20 years in the music industry, I’ve realised that the biggest challenge isn’t talent or inspiration—it’s consistency.
Too many musicians rely on “feeling inspired” before making music. But if you want to build a music career, you need to treat it like a business. A doctor can’t say, “I’m not inspired to do surgery today.” Musicians can’t afford to think that way either.
My personal routine is simple but effective:
Wake up an hour or two earlier each day to work on ideas.
Spend another two hours after work finishing tracks or polishing concepts.
Aim to complete something every day—whether it’s a track, a beat, or even just progress toward an idea.
This approach means I’m constantly moving forward, not waiting around for the “perfect” moment of inspiration. And here’s the secret: once you show up consistently, inspiration comes more naturally.
I’ll be sharing more tips on productivity, creativity, and discipline in the weeks ahead. But I’d love to know—would you prefer more content like this (mindset and consistency), or should I stick to the educational side (royalties, SAMRO, CAPASSO, etc.)?
